Several Gaia Gems bracelets — our 2X, 3X and 6X designs — build small mineral and metal inserts into the inner band. People often ask what those actually are. Here is a straight answer, materially speaking.
Neodymium Magnets
An alloy of neodymium, iron and boron (Nd₂Fe₁₄B). These are the strongest permanent magnets commercially available — substantially stronger than the ceramic or alnico magnets of the same size you would find in a fridge magnet. Ours are rated at 3,000 Gauss and are integrated into the core architecture of the band rather than surface-mounted, which is why they hold their field strength over years of wear.
Negative Ion Minerals
A tourmaline-based ceramic composite, set as a small polished insert. Tourmaline is a boron silicate mineral with a genuinely unusual physical property: it is piezoelectric and pyroelectric, meaning it generates a small electrical charge under pressure or a change in temperature. That property is why it appears in this style of jewellery — you will find it in our women's ion bracelets and men's ion bracelets.
Germanium
A metalloid element (Ge, atomic number 32), best known as a semiconductor material used in fibre optics and electronics. It has been a traditional inclusion in wellness-style jewellery for decades, set as a small polished disc.
Far-Infrared Minerals
A ceramic composite, often blended with tourmaline or zirconium oxide, set as a mineral insert within the element core.
What the Numbers Mean
The 1X, 2X, 3X and 6X naming refers to the strength of the bracelet — the higher the number, the stronger the piece. A 6X is our strongest build; a 1X is the lightest, in a deliberately minimal band. Separately, Plain, Thin and Thick describe the link profile, not the strength — so which you choose is partly about power and partly about how substantial you want the piece to feel on the wrist.
The Housing
All of it sits inside surgical-grade stainless steel or titanium, both chosen for corrosion resistance and how well they are tolerated against skin. Titanium is roughly 45% lighter than steel at comparable strength and is among the most hypoallergenic metals available for jewellery — see the titanium collection if that matters for your skin.
