Every Gaia Gems piece is built from real minerals, gemstones, and metals — not just decoration. This page is our full materials reference: what each stone actually is, the geology behind its colour and durability, and the meaning it has traditionally carried across cultures. We keep this page current as our collection grows, and we encourage our team to reference it whenever a customer asks "what is this made of?"

Element Core Materials
Several Gaia Gems bracelets (our 2X, 3X, and 6X "element core" designs) build in small inserts of the materials below, alongside natural mineral beads. We describe what these materials are. We make no claim about any physical effect.
Neodymium Magnets
- What it is: An alloy of neodymium, iron, and boron (Nd₂Fe₁₄B) — the strongest type of permanent magnet commercially available, far stronger than standard ceramic or alnico magnets of the same size.
- In our jewellery: Set into the inner band of our element-core designs at 3,000 Gauss. Magnetic jewellery has been worn as personal adornment across many cultures for well over a century.
Germanium
- What it is: A metalloid element (Ge, atomic number 32), best known as a semiconductor material used in fibre optics and electronics.
- In our jewellery: A traditional inclusion in this style of jewellery, set as a small polished insert within the element core.
Far-Infrared (FIR) Minerals
- What it is: A ceramic composite, often blended with tourmaline or zirconium oxide.
- In our jewellery: Set as a mineral insert within the element core.
Negative Ion Minerals
- What it is: A tourmaline-based ceramic composite.
- In our jewellery: Set as a mineral insert within the element core.
Dead Sea Minerals
- What it is: The Dead Sea is roughly 10 times saltier than ocean water, with an unusually high concentration of magnesium chloride, potassium chloride, calcium chloride, and bromide compounds.
- In our jewellery: Represented as mineral-infused beads within the element core, referencing that mineral profile.
Metals & Alloys
Titanium
- What it is: A pure metallic element (Ti, atomic number 22).
- Why we use it: An exceptional strength-to-weight ratio (about 45% lighter than steel at comparable strength), and it forms a stable oxide layer on its surface that makes it highly resistant to corrosion, tarnish, and everyday wear.
- Biocompatibility: Titanium is widely used in medical and dental implants because it is very well tolerated by the body — one of the most hypoallergenic metals available for jewellery.
Copper
- What it is: A pure metallic element (Cu, atomic number 29).
- Real properties: Copper is an excellent electrical and thermal conductor, and it develops a natural patina as its surface oxidises with wear.
- A long tradition: Copper bracelets are among the oldest jewellery traditions in the world, worn across many cultures from ancient Egypt onward.
Surgical-Grade Stainless Steel
- What it is: An iron-based alloy containing chromium (and typically nickel), the same alloy family used for surgical instruments.
- Why we use it: Highly corrosion- and tarnish-resistant, and holds polish and finish extremely well over years of daily wear.
- Note for sensitive skin: While generally well-tolerated, stainless steel does contain trace nickel, which can occasionally trigger a reaction in customers with a known nickel allergy — worth mentioning proactively at a market table.
Gold, Rose Gold, and Silver Finishes
- What it is: Our gold, rose gold, and silver-tone pieces are achieved by plating a base metal (titanium or stainless steel) with a thin, durable finish layer — a standard, industry-wide technique that lets us offer real gold and rose-gold tones at an accessible price point while keeping the underlying structural strength of titanium or steel.
Crystals & Gemstones
Every stone below is a genuine mineral or mineral variety, cut and polished from natural rough. The traditional meanings noted are cultural and historical — folklore, not medicine.
Amazonite
- What it is: A blue-green variety of microcline feldspar (KAlSi₃O₈).
- Hardness: 6–6.5 on the Mohs scale.
- Colour origin: Trace lead and water content within the crystal lattice produce its signature blue-green.
- Formation: Forms in granite pegmatites; major sources include Colorado, Brazil, Madagascar, and Russia.
- Traditionally associated with: Known as the "Stone of Courage," long associated with steadiness, honest communication, and self-expression.
Amethyst
- What it is: The purple variety of quartz (SiO₂).
- Hardness: 7 on the Mohs scale.
- Colour origin: Iron impurities within the quartz, altered by natural irradiation, produce the purple.
- Formation: Grows in geodes — gas bubbles in cooling volcanic rock. Major sources: Brazil, Uruguay, Zambia.
- Fun fact: The name comes from the Greek amethystos, "not intoxicated" — the Greeks believed it warded off drunkenness.
- Traditionally associated with: One of the most recognised stones in crystal tradition — long associated with a quiet mind, stillness, and intuition.
Apatite
- What it is: A calcium phosphate mineral (Ca₅(PO₄)₃(F,Cl,OH)) — the same mineral family that forms tooth enamel and bone.
- Hardness: 5 on the Mohs scale.
- Colour origin: Our beads are the blue-green variety, coloured by trace manganese and iron.
- Fun fact: Named from the Greek apate ("deceit") because it is so often mistaken for other gemstones.
- Traditionally associated with: Clarity, focus, and motivation toward a goal.
Aquamarine
- What it is: The blue-green variety of beryl (Be₃Al₂Si₆O₁₈) — the same mineral family as emerald.
- Hardness: 7.5–8 on the Mohs scale.
- Colour origin: Trace iron within the beryl crystal structure.
- Formation: Forms in granite pegmatites, often as long hexagonal crystals. The official March birthstone.
- Traditionally associated with: Carried by sailors as a talisman for safe passage; long associated with calm and clear, courageous communication.
Black Onyx
- What it is: A banded variety of chalcedony — a microcrystalline form of quartz (SiO₂). Solid-black onyx in jewellery, ours included, is typically colour-enhanced (dyed and heat-treated) from naturally banded grey-and-white chalcedony — a standard, industry-wide practice for this stone.
- Hardness: 6.5–7 on the Mohs scale.
- Traditionally associated with: Strength and resilience, self-control and discipline, and grounding protection.
Black Tourmaline (Schorl)
- What it is: A complex boron silicate mineral; the iron-rich member of the tourmaline group.
- Hardness: 7–7.5 on the Mohs scale.
- Formation: Forms in granite and pegmatites; it is the most common tourmaline species.
- Real physical property: Tourmaline is naturally piezoelectric and pyroelectric — it generates a small electrical charge under pressure or heat change.
- Traditionally associated with: One of the most widely used protection stones in crystal tradition — long associated with grounding and a sense of security.
Carnelian
- What it is: An orange-red variety of chalcedony (SiO₂).
- Hardness: 6.5–7 on the Mohs scale.
- Colour origin: Iron oxide (hematite) inclusions distributed through the stone.
- Traditionally associated with: Worn since ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia — one of the oldest gemstones in continuous human use — long associated with courage, motivation, and creativity.
Cat's Eye
- What it is: Natural quartz cat's eye — genuine quartz (SiO₂) containing fine, parallel fibrous inclusions that create "chatoyancy," a bright, moving band of light across the cabochon as it turns in the light.
- Hardness: 7 on the Mohs scale.
- On the colour range: The chatoyant band comes from the stone's internal fibre structure, not from any coating — genuine across our champagne, green, and pink pieces.
- Traditionally associated with: Guarding against the "evil eye," sharpening insight, and drawing good fortune.
Citrine
- What it is: The yellow-to-orange variety of quartz (SiO₂).
- Hardness: 7 on the Mohs scale.
- Colour origin: Natural iron impurities within the quartz produce citrine's yellow-to-orange colour. Ours is natural citrine, not heat-treated amethyst — worth knowing, since heat-treated stone is common elsewhere in the market and genuine natural citrine is the rarer, more valuable version.
- Traditionally associated with: Known as the "Merchant's Stone," traditionally kept in cash registers and wallets — long associated with abundance, prosperity, and confidence.
Clear Quartz
- What it is: Pure silicon dioxide (SiO₂) — the most abundant mineral in the Earth's crust.
- Hardness: 7 on the Mohs scale.
- Real physical property: Quartz is piezoelectric, meaning it generates a precise electrical oscillation under pressure — this is the actual reason quartz is used in watches and electronics.
- Traditionally associated with: Known as the "Master Stone" in crystal tradition — long regarded as an amplifying stone worn alongside others.
Fluorite
- What it is: Calcium fluoride (CaF₂).
- Hardness: 4 on the Mohs scale — notably softer than most stones on this page, so fluorite jewellery should be treated a bit more gently (avoid knocks and harsh chemicals).
- Colour origin: Wide colour range from trace element substitutions and natural radiation exposure.
- Traditionally associated with: Known as the "Genius Stone" — long associated with focus, clarity, and clear decision-making.
Garnet
- What it is: Not a single mineral but a group of closely related silicate minerals (almandine, pyrope, and others).
- Hardness: 6.5–7.5 on the Mohs scale, varying by species.
- Colour origin: Most red garnet gets its colour from iron and manganese. The official January birthstone.
- Traditionally associated with: Carried by travellers throughout history as a protective talisman — long associated with willpower and safe passage.
Green Aventurine
- What it is: A variety of quartzite (a granular quartz rock) containing sparkling inclusions of fuchsite, a chromium-rich mica.
- Hardness: 6.5–7 on the Mohs scale.
- Real physical property: Its shimmer is called "aventurescence" — light reflecting off the flat, aligned mica flakes inside the stone.
- Traditionally associated with: Known as the "Stone of Opportunity" — long associated with luck and prosperity.
Hematite
- What it is: An iron oxide mineral (Fe₂O₃), one of the primary ores of iron.
- Hardness: 5.5–6.5 on the Mohs scale, but very dense for its size.
- Fun fact: Named from the Greek haima ("blood") — despite its metallic grey-black surface, hematite leaves a red-brown streak when scratched against unglazed porcelain. A quick, genuine way to demonstrate the mineral to a customer.
- Traditionally associated with: Grounding and stability, confidence, and willpower.
Howlite
- What it is: A calcium borosilicate mineral, naturally white or grey with dark, web-like veining. Because it is naturally porous, howlite readily absorbs dye and is one of the most commonly dyed stones in the industry — often coloured to imitate turquoise or other gems.
- Hardness: 3.5 on the Mohs scale — soft and porous.
- Traditionally associated with: Quiet, patience, and stillness.
Labradorite
- What it is: A feldspar mineral from the plagioclase series.
- Hardness: 6–6.5 on the Mohs scale.
- Real physical property: Its signature flash of blue, green, or gold — called labradorescence — is caused by light interfering within microscopically thin, layered structures inside the crystal, not by any coating or dye.
- Fun fact: Named after Labrador, Canada, where it was first formally described.
- Traditionally associated with: Known in Inuit tradition as the "Stone of the Northern Lights" — long associated with intuition and transformation through change.
Lava Stone (Basalt)
- What it is: A volcanic igneous rock — technically a rock made of multiple minerals (mainly plagioclase feldspar and pyroxene), not a single crystal.
- Hardness: Roughly 5–6 on the Mohs scale, and notably porous.
- Formation: Formed when lava cools and solidifies rapidly at the Earth's surface, trapping gas bubbles that give it its porous texture.
- Practical note: Its porosity is why lava stone beads are popular for diffusing a drop of essential oil.
- Traditionally associated with: Strength and stability through times of change, and a connection to the earth's elemental character.
Obsidian
- What it is: Volcanic glass — not a crystalline mineral at all. It forms when felsic lava (rich in silicon, oxygen, aluminium, sodium, and potassium) cools so quickly that atoms have no time to arrange into a crystal structure.
- Hardness: 5–5.5 on the Mohs scale.
- Fun fact: Obsidian fractures into edges sharp enough that it was used for cutting tools and blades throughout human history.
- Traditionally associated with: One of the oldest protection stones in human history — long associated with grounding and honest self-reflection.
Prehnite
- What it is: A calcium aluminium silicate mineral, typically pale green to yellow-green.
- Hardness: 6–6.5 on the Mohs scale.
- Fun fact: The first mineral ever to be named after a person — Colonel Hendrik von Prehn, who brought the stone to Europe from South Africa in the 1780s.
- Traditionally associated with: Inner peace and unconditional love.
Rose Quartz
- What it is: The pink variety of quartz (SiO₂).
- Hardness: 7 on the Mohs scale.
- Colour origin: Trace titanium, iron, or manganese, along with microscopic mineral fibres, produce the pink and give the stone its characteristic soft, slightly cloudy translucence (genuine rose quartz is rarely perfectly clear).
- Traditionally associated with: The most recognised "heart stone" in crystal tradition — long associated with love, compassion, and self-kindness.
Smoky Quartz
- What it is: The brown-to-grey variety of quartz (SiO₂).
- Hardness: 7 on the Mohs scale.
- Colour origin: Natural irradiation of trace aluminium within the quartz lattice.
- Traditionally associated with: Grounding and steadiness.
Sodalite
- What it is: A sodium aluminium silicate chloride mineral, deep blue, usually with white calcite veining running through it.
- Hardness: 5.5–6 on the Mohs scale.
- Traditionally associated with: Known as the "Stone of Logic" — long associated with rational thought and clear communication.
Strawberry Quartz
- What it is: Natural quartz (SiO₂) containing fine red or pink mineral inclusions — commonly lepidocrocite or hematite fibres — that give the stone its soft red shimmer. Ours is genuine strawberry quartz, not the dyed or man-made glass sometimes sold under the same name at lower price points.
- Hardness: 7 on the Mohs scale.
- Traditionally associated with: Warmth, compassion, and emotional balance.
Tiger's Eye
- What it is: A golden-brown variety of quartz.
- Hardness: 7 on the Mohs scale.
- Real physical property: Its silky, moving band of light (chatoyancy) comes from quartz that has pseudomorphically replaced fibrous crocidolite, preserving the fibre structure inside a hard quartz shell.
- Traditionally associated with: Courage, confidence, and grounding through times of change.
Turquoise
- What it is: A hydrated copper aluminium phosphate mineral.
- Hardness: 5–6 on the Mohs scale — relatively soft and porous.
- Colour origin: Copper content produces the blue; iron content shifts it toward green. Because natural turquoise is soft and porous, most turquoise sold in jewellery today — genuine turquoise included — is "stabilised" with a clear resin to improve durability and colour consistency, a standard, disclosed industry process.
- Traditionally associated with: One of the oldest gemstones used in jewellery, worn continuously for over 6,000 years — long associated across many cultures with protecting travellers and honest communication.
Accent Materials
These aren't gemstones, and we want our team to always be upfront about that — it's an easy way to build trust with a customer.
Swarovski Crystal
- What it is: A man-made crystal glass, precision-cut and faceted for maximum sparkle, produced by the Austrian company Swarovski. It is not a natural mineral or gemstone.
Cubic Zirconia (CZ)
- What it is: A lab-created crystalline form of zirconium dioxide (ZrO₂), grown synthetically rather than mined. It's a popular diamond simulant.
- Hardness: 8–8.5 on the Mohs scale — genuinely hard and durable for daily wear, despite being man-made.
